Woman dies in TSA custody at airport

( NY Post Story)

Manhattan resident Carol Ann Gotbaum, who is married to the stepson of [NYC] Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, died in a Phoenix airport holding cell while in police custody. Phoenix authorities believe she may have died while trying to get out of her handcuffs.

Phoenix police said Carol Ann Gotbaum, 45, who lives in Manhattan, appeared to have strangled herself while trying to wriggle free from handcuffs while in a holding cell after the Friday incident.

Now this is just my gut talking, but I think some TSA puke agent killed her convinced her to be quiet.

“The officers were not able to calm Ms. Gotbaum and eventually arrested her for disorderly conduct.”

Gotbaum resisted, and was “continually screaming” after being put into a holding cell, Hill said.

Officers checked on her every 15 minutes, but some five to 10 minutes after one check-in, he said, she had gone silent.

They then found that she wasn’t breathing and attempts to revive her failed.

“It appeared as though Ms. Gotbaum had possibly tried to manipulate the handcuffs from behind her to the front, got tangled up in the process, and they ended up around her neck area,” Hill said.

Now, I’ve tried the Houdini handcuff escape. EVERYONE knows you can’t get your hands from back to front over your head. You pull your legs through. Duh! It hurts, but it is possible.
Your shoulders don’t rotate enough to get your cuffed hands over your head. You’d dis-locate your shoulder first.

Some TSA goon agent didn’t like the noise she was making, and killed her got her to be less noisy.
But the fix is already in…
My guess? “Natural Causes.”

This is the second reason I refuse to fly comercial airlines. The first is that the pilots are not yet armed.

Remember, folksies, “Disorderly Conduct” carries the death penalty in an airport, now…

  1. The comments above sound biased but are actually very logical. It is ludicrous to think that she could have strangled herself trying to get the handcuffs from back to front. Whoever made that statement needs to be suspect number one. The simpler and therefore more likely possibility is that she was screaming and to quiet her the police (or a single agent) placed something in her mouth (a sock for example) that she suffocated on while they left her alone. I don’t know of anything that would indicate premeditation but it is certainly negligent and it is homocide.

Why isn’t CNN all over this? Both news reports I’ve read reported it very matter-of-factly which is shocking since CNN and every other news group almost never reports anything with just facts. Is this one just too easy? What’s the deal?

  2. My comments sound biased? Ok.
Like I said, just my gut telling me, and I’ve learned to trust my gut.
